WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP CADETS DEVELOP A
WIDE VARIETY OF SKILLS!
WHO
DO WE NEED?
We need
men and women (over 18) to join our dedicated team of instructors
and staff at Sea Cadets Units around Bermuda. There are three Units
in all, so there may be one near your area. Volunteers will be
expected to give their time and expertise free. There is no pay
(other than expenses when travelling as an escort or on training
courses). However, like our established instructors, you'll find the
rewards in terms of satisfaction and enjoyment are immense. Most
Units Primarily need uniformed staff. Civilian instructors with
specialist skills are also much needed on particularly for weekend
activity.
COULD YOU INSTRUCT IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS?
As you would expect the majority of the skills we require are
related to the sea and seamanship, suiting those with a nautical
background. However, as you can see from the list below, civilian
volunteers can instruct certain
subjects very well:
GENERAL SEAMANSHIP;
SAILING; CANOEING;
RADIO COMMUNICATIONS; ADVENTUROUS TRAINING; ENGINEERING
(ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL); COOKING AND CATERING; STORES
ACCOUNTANCY; CLERICAL WORK; BUGLEING AND DRUMMING; INSTRUCTIONAL
TECHNIQUE AND OTHERS.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DO YOU NEED?
This depends entirely on the subject being taught: e.g. a garage
mechanic could easily teach basic engineering without certificates,
but sailing, instruction would require a certificate from a
recognised sailing body such as RYA. In many cases it's simply a
matter of sheer experience. Your local contact will be able to tell
you.
WHAT
HAPPENS IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED AS AN INSTRUCTOR?
The minimum time commitment for an instructor is 2 hours a week, on
Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. In practice, most instructors
find it rewarding to devote more time to Cadets. You start as a
civilian instructor but may if you wish progress to a uniformed
instructor. Any Service background will be taken into
consideration.
Simply contact our HQ office at 295-2759,
sccbda@seacadets.bm or the
Sea Cadet Unit in your area. In the end there is nothing quite as
rewarding as using your own special skills to help young people
develop into fine citizens of the future.
