Good day all,
I hope you’ve all had a restful
and relaxing Easter. Now that we’re back to it, we have a bit of work to do
this coming weekend. See below for details.
Also note that I have
updated the calendar, and put it on the
website with new information on Corps events going forward, making it a busy
few months going into summer.
Friday 9 April –
Dress No. 4s (bring half blues on a hangar).
Pilot Jemmy Darrell class
Set up for Pot Luck dinner
Drill practice for parade
Don’t forget to bring your Pot Luck Dinner ticket money!
Saturday 10 April – we have two events in
the late afternoon/evening, so be ready, aye, ready!
Pilot Jemmy Darrell Parade
For
those who need to change into Dress uniform, be at the unit at 3:30pm. For
everyone, Inspection will be at 3:45pm. We will march to the Square at 4:15pm.
We will march up to St. Peter’s from the Square at 4:45pm, for a Graveside
Service starting at 5pm. After the Service, we will march to the Ferry dock.
Upon conclusion of the Parade at the Ferry Dock, we will proceed directly back to
the unit for the Pot Luck Dinner, which starts at 6pm. I may send a small
contingent back to the unit when we march off from the Service, to help out at
the unit. Yeomen, standard bearers and piper, we will need your services on the
day also.
Pot Luck Dinner
For
those who have not indicated their contribution, I believe Ms. Steede called
everyone last night. Please bring your food when you drop off your cadet in the
afternoon, but in any case, all food contributions must be at the unit no later
than 5:00pm, HOT. For any desserts, please bring them ready to go (i.e. in
bags, or otherwise in individual portions).
Best regards,
Lt. Guishard

Dear All,
Well done to everyone for a successful fish fry fundraiser last Friday!
It was a lot of work, but with the help of the cadets and parents, it was very
manageable. Please ensure that all ticket proceeds are handed to Ms.
Steede on Friday evening, so that we can tally up the results.
Friday, March 5th
Please note that we will be meeting at TS Bermuda (Admiralty House unit) this
Friday, so please do not go to our unit building. Cadets should report at
the usual time (no later than 18.45) and we will finish at 21.00, as
usual. Dress is No.1 (full blues) for those who have it, and No.4s for
new entries. Those in No.4s should ensure that they are wearing a plain
navy blue sweatshirt (it will be cool that evening).
Uniform
We are pleased to report that we have now received a shipment of "TS
Admiral Somers" sweatshirts, t-shirts, ball caps and windbreaker
jackets. These will be available for purchase from the unit on Friday,
12 March. Please note that the sweatshirts, t-shirts and ball caps
will form part of the No.4 and summer uniform, and as such are mandatory.
The windbreakers are optional and are not expected to form part of the uniform
for the time being (unless cadets are travelling with a Sea Cadet group).
All items are navy blue, and embroidered with the BSCC Crest and "TS
Admiral Somers, St. George's Bermuda" (t-shirts are printed). Prices
are as follows:
Caps - $15.00
T-shirts - $15.00
Sweatshirts - $25.00
Windbreaker jacket - $45.00
Please note that all other (Sea Cadet) uniform parts are being ordered by the
Bermuda Sea Cadet Association, and we will advise when these are available.
UK Trip
Please bear in mind that the deadline for confirming cadets' participation in
the UK trip this summer (and for payment of the $200 deposit) is Friday, March
12th. If your child is 12 years old or older, and intends to participate,
please let us know.
Thanks very much

Hi all,
First
let me say I am very proud of those of you who participated in the parade on
Saturday - you did a great job, and we got quite a few compliments from various
members of the public (not to mention the Mayor of St. George's). Well Done
all!
Friday February 26 - Fish Fry
Fundraiser
Dress- No. 4s and sweaters, fall in 5:30pm
As you all know, we have the Fish Fry coming
up on Friday, and we ant to have all hands on deck from 5L30pm onwards. The
Fish Fry itself starts at 6pm, ending at 8pm, and then after the cleanup, we
can all be dismissed (hopefully) early, by 8:30pm. We have had a poor response
from parents as to what desserts they will bring. Please advise us by e-mailing
what dessert you plan to bring. Please have it wrapped up individually and
ready to go with each meal. Another thing to note when serving: Cadets are NOT
to be eating while we are serving food.... They will be fed AFTER the event is
over.....
Let's make this a great success once again!
March 5 - Inspection and Colours
Ceremony Training at TS Bermuda.
All cadets are to report to TS Bermuda (Admiralty House) at 6:45pm, for
training on the Colours Ceremony. Uniform ato be advised, but be ready to wear
your Full Blues.
Best regards,
Lt. Guishard

18 February 2010
Hi all,
We have a
few events coming up that you should all be prepared for.
Friday February 19 - This week we will work on uniform. We are still awaiting
uniform orders from the Association, and I thank you for your patience.
As I stated last week, all cadets are to bring their dress uniform, clean,
ironed and neatly hanging on a hanger. You will leave the dress uniform
labelled, hanging up at the unit. That means WEAR your No. 4s,
and BRING your No.1s (Full Blues), if you have them. Guard
members, wear your webbing, and bring any extra webbing you may have. For those
who have No.4s and do not have regulation issued sweatshirts, during this
chilly weather, please wear a PLAIN NAVY BLUE sweatshirt or NAVY BLUE
school sweater (with
sleeves - please no sleeveless sweater-vests). If you have been issued or
purchased a Sea Cadet sweatshirt, you must wear that. We will also be doing
some parade practice for the Midshipman Dale Ceremony on Friday, plus a class
on time-keeping.
Saturday February 20 - Midshipman Dale Ceremony and Parade - all cadets with Full Blues are to
arrive at the unit by 4pm to change into their uniform. All cadets who only
have No. 4s will arrive no later than 4:30pm. This is a parade during which the
Sea Cadets take a leading role, so let's make sure we look sharp!
Friday February 26 - Fish Fry - We expect that you will want to
get more Fish Fry tickets to sell this week, as by now, surely you must all
have sold them! We will be starting at 6pm, so all cadets need to be at the
unit early, at 5:30pm. Parents, please bring desserts by 5:30pm, individually
wrapped and ready to go - we can't spend the time cutting up cake and putting
desserts into bags - please have the, ready to be included with the dinners.
This is a big event for us, and a money maker, but only if we have all hands on
deck, and we all do our best to sell those tickets!
Once again,
to reiterate some points that were made at the Parent's meeting recently:
1) 3
consecutive absences without a phone call means, "Please hand in your
uniform". Call the unit phone 297-1975 by 6:30pm if you're
going to be late. After that, it's $5 late fee paid to Ms. Steede.
2) If we have not seen your Parent/Guardian this year, they
must come down before you are allowed to continue.
3) Dues are
$100 this year - if you haven't paid them yet, they need to be in NOW. Please
see me Friday night if you have any questions or concerns about this.
Best
regards,
Lt. Guishard

12 February 2010
Dear All,
I trust that everyone is surviving the blustery weather, safe and sound.
Hopefully, we will see some improvement before tomorrow evening.
For tomorrow, we will be conducting classes as usual. Senior cadets will
receive a class in basic navigation and communications from our friends at
Bermuda Radio (Harbour Radio). Juniors will have seamanship and drill
instruction. Dress is No.4 uniform.
Reminders:
Dues - there are still a large number of cadets for whom dues
have not been paid. If you have not paid your $100 annual dues, please do
so this Friday. The absolute deadline is 15 February.
Fish Fry - a fish-fry fundraiser is scheduled for February
26th. Tickets have been handed out to every cadet, and we expect all to
be sold. If you have not received tickets, they will be given to you on
Friday.
Midshipman Dale Parade - as set out in the calendar (click
Calendar link in the Sidebar), the Midshipman Dale ceremony and parade is
scheduled to Saturday, February 20th. Cadets will report to the unit
building, fully dressed and ready to fall in, before 4.30pm. Dress
is No.1 uniform (full blues) for those that have it. New Entries will
wear No.4 uniform. Please check your uniform carefully now, and report
any deficiencies on Friday.
Thanks very much for your continued support.
Kind regards

4 February 2010
Hi all,
Thanks very much to all those parents that
attended our meeting last week. It was an important one, and I think we had
good representation. Nonetheless, there were at least 4 cadets who were either
absent or unrepresented without letting us know. We need to see a parent or
guardian before your child/cadet is allowed to continue. I will follow up
directly with each of those parents.
Important take-home points from the meeting:
- Calendar of events has been posted on the
website, and we will endeavour to update it monthly. Click 'Calendar' in
the Sidebar to download a PDF version.
Some key upcoming events for this month are:
Police night - Friday 5th February
(more about this below)
Midshipman Dale Ceremony
-
4:30pm Saturday 20th February
Fish Fry Fundraiser - Friday 26th February
- Uniform
Whilst we are
awaiting an order for uniform pats from the Bermuda Sea Cadet Association, we
will do our best with the uniforms we already have (mainly no. 4s for the newer
cadets), and a uniform deposit of $75 will be due once we issue dress uniform.
Please be patient while we sort out these details.
- An
introduction of new staff - welcome to Petty Officer Ian Frith and Petty Officer
Cullen O'Hara, who will both be valuable additions to TS Admiral Somers
- Annual
Dues
are $100 per year, due February 15
- Conduct
and timeliness - As we normally remind parents and cadets, if you are going
to be late on a regular training evening, call the unit at 297-1975 before
6:30pm, and leave a message (the voicemail picks up the time of the call, so we
will know if you are late). Messages will not be checked after around 6:30pm,
as we are busy preparing for Colours and Prayers. If we are on a field trip or
otherwise meeting off-site, you may call my cell phone 330-5000 or Mr.
Frith's 504-1906 (do not call our cell phones for the regular training
evening!)
- Proposed
UK trip
We are planning to take at least 8 cadets of at least 12 years old, of good
conduct, to the UK in the summer for 10 days (July 23 - Aug 3 are the tentative
dates), to visit our sister unit, T.S. Vancouver in King's Lynn (their website
is here: http://units.ms-sc.org/kingslynn). In addition to the criteria
mentioned above, cadets who wish to participate must attend all parades, have a
good attendance record and actively assist in all fundraisers. There will be
more fundraising efforts than usual because of this trip, and we hope to be
able to enjoy the success we had last time (October 2005), when we raised
enough that the parents did not have to pay to send their cadets. That being
said, we will need some commitment up front, and $200 will be required as a
deposit for each cadet who want to secure a place. that deposit will be due on
Friday 5 March.
Friday
5 February - Police night at Southside Police Station - Dress Full Blues
(Guard, no need for webbing) - if you do not have Full Blues, No. 4s will
suffice. Staff members without full blues may wear white dress shirt, black
trousers, black tie, wool navy pullover, black shoes and socks. Regardless of
what uniform you are wearing that night, it should be clean, pressed, polished
and otherwise, buffed! We will be out in public, and we want to look sharp. We
will be doing an inspection beforehand!
We will be
conducting our Friday evening entirely away from TS Admiral Somers on Friday -
don't turn up there, you will be on your own in the dark! Please arrange to
have your cadet dropped off on Friday at 6:30pm west of Southside Police
Station, in St. David's. The entrance is opposite the boat yard as you go into
St. David's - please see map attached.

Collection
will be at 8:45pm at the same location. Whilst we appreciate the help of
parents, we do not want the tour to be overwhelmed with too many (I have told
them around 15 cadets and 5 adults), so please allow this tour to be one for
the cadets, who will fill you in on the details afterwards. If time allows we
will be conducting some drill afterwards. Thanks very much to Inspector Andy
Morgan and the Staff of Southside Police Station for coordinating Friday night
for us - we're looking forward to a great field trip!
Best regards,
Lt. Guishard

28 January 2010
Hi all,
Now that I am back on island, I wish you all a Happy New Year. Judging from
what I saw last week, the programme is off to a great start for 2010.
Friday January 29 - Parents Meeting
All cadets to fall in
645pm as usual, dress No 4s.
As you should all know by now, there is a Parents Meeting tomorrow
evening beginning at 7pm. Every cadet
must be represented!!! If you will have a problem making it
to this meeting, please advise and we will set up an alternative time to sit
down with you. If a cadet is not represented by a parent or guardian, they will
not be allowed to return to TSAS until such time as we have met and spoken to
their parents. This may seem harsh to some, but we refuse to continue training
cadets if we have had little contact with the people responsible for
them.
The agenda for this meeting is as follows:
- Calendar of training and events for the next few months (on our website
http://www.seacadets.bm/tsadmiralsomers/,
click 'Calendar' in the Sidebar to download)
- Uniform
- Welcome of new staff
- Dues
- Conduct and timeliness
- Proposed UK trip
- Fundraising efforts
In terms of training, we will continue with rope work, guard drill, and a short
review of first aid.
Also tomorrow evening, we will be selling fish sandwiches with chips and water
for $10 - proceeds go towards the unit.
Friday February 5 - Police Night
We are working on arranging for a visit either a) to Southside Police Station
for a tour or b) from a Police person to talk about drugs, gangs and the law. I
hope to have an updates for you at or prior to the Parents' Meeting.
See you all on Friday!
Best regards,
Lt. Guishard
